When it comes to Kerala rice, it is traditionally cooked twice, as it is going to need some extra water. It is a great source of fiber, and it if you’ve never seen it, its reddish in color.
Kerala is actually a state in India, hence the name of the grain and its origins. You can use what’s called the open vessel method to cook it if you like. You can also use a pressure cooker or an instant pot. Each method is going to require that you cook it for about 30 minutes.
Pressure Cooker Procedure
For the pressure cooker method, you need only 5 cups of water per two cups of the grain. When using the open vessel method, you’re going to need a lot more water. You need to use anywhere from 8-10 cups of water for the two cups of it. You always want to start by washing or rinsing the grain, subsequently draining the water.
In a pressure cooker, you would then add the water, and put the pressure cooker on the lit stove. Now you’re going to add the rice, and you want to stir it a couple of times to get everything evenly distributed. After that, you close the lid, and the vapor will start to disperse. Once that happens, you turn on the whistle.
Remember that the cooking time is 30 minutes, and you certainly want the rice to have the proper amount of time to boil. The whistles will tell you when to take the pressure cooker off of the stove. Now you know how to cook this healthy grain.
It is just one option you have available to you if you want something different besides white rice. If you like to use rice in various dishes, why not try something new?
